Reclaiming self-confidence by facing your inner demons

Confidence is often masked by fear and past traumas that cause us to hide our true selves. True transformation comes from awareness, facing inner fears, and reclaiming authenticity rather than relying on superficial tips. Embracing your real self may lead to external rejection, but it brings internal freedom and genuine connections.

Have you ever wondered why you feel reserved or shy, even though you weren’t born that way? As a baby, you cried loudly for your needs, full of life and passion. Somewhere along the way, many of us start wearing "sunglasses"—metaphorical masks of shyness, shame, or fear—that hide our true selves.

This article explores the journey of reclaiming confidence by removing these masks and embracing authenticity.

The Origin of Our Masks

We are not born shy or reserved; these traits develop from experiences and subtle traumas that cause us to suppress our true nature. For example, a child who is laughed at in class might feel ostracised and learn to hide their true self to fit in. Over time, these masks become so ingrained that we confuse them with who we really are.

The Illusion of Confidence Tips and Tricks

Many seek quick fixes—tips, tricks, morning routines—to appear confident. However, these are often compensations, not solutions. They help us fake confidence but do not address the root cause: the fear and trauma that made us hide in the first place.

The common advice to "fake it till you make it" assumes you are being authentic underneath, but what if you are already wearing a mask? Instead, the approach should be to "act real until you remember" who you truly are.

Remembering Who You Are: The Lion King Analogy

Like Simba in The Lion King, who runs away from his problems and hides his true identity, many of us live as "bug eaters"—pretending to be someone we are not. The turning point comes when we hear the call to "remember who you are" and begin shedding the false identities.

This process involves identifying and releasing all the beliefs and experiences that have programmed us to feel unworthy or ashamed. It’s not about becoming confident; it’s about realizing the confidence that has always been within us.

Facing Your Inner Demons

True transformation is not easy or comfortable. It requires facing your inner fears and traumas head-on, rather than escaping them through distractions or superficial self-help techniques.

For example, if you fear public speaking, the traditional approach is to desensitise yourself by practising repeatedly. But this can numb your feelings rather than heal the underlying fear. Instead, you should explore the root of the fear, understand what triggers it, and release the emotional charge behind it.

The Inner Child and Emotional Audit

We all carry an inner child that still fears rejection, abandonment, or failure. This inner child’s fears often manifest as disproportionate emotional reactions to everyday situations.

To reclaim your confidence, conduct an emotional audit:

  • Notice your feelings in triggering situations.

  • Analyze if your reactions are proportionate to reality.

  • Identify the past experiences that may have caused these fears.

Listening to your inner dialogue, even when it is harsh or critical, provides valuable insight into what you need to heal.

Authenticity Comes with a Price

Being authentic can lead to external rejection. People who resonated with your old, masked self might not accept the real you. This can be painful, but it is necessary for true freedom.

Choosing authenticity means you stop abandoning yourself. You stop pretending to be someone you’re not. This internal acceptance is the foundation for real confidence and genuine relationships.

The Golden Prison of Inauthenticity

Many people live in a "golden prison"—a life that looks perfect on the outside but feels empty inside. They have friends, money, and success but feel disconnected from themselves.

True safety and security come from within, from knowing you are okay no matter what happens externally. This inner security allows you to build authentic relationships based on who you truly are.

The Importance of Being Alone with Yourself

A key part of this journey is developing a relationship with yourself. Can you spend time alone without distractions? Can you enjoy your own company?

Try scheduling time to be with yourself—go on a date with yourself, sit in a restaurant alone without your phone, and allow boredom to surface. Boredom is valuable because it creates space for self-reflection and creativity.

The Work Is Uncomfortable but Necessary

This process is like marriage counselling with yourself. You must listen to your inner critic, understand its messages, and work through the pain.

It’s about re-owning and forgiving your inner child, releasing shame, and healing past wounds. Over time, you will feel more at home in your body and mind, no longer needing to hide behind masks.

Commitment to Authenticity

Reclaiming your confidence is a commitment to yourself. It requires courage to face your fears, accept possible rejection, and let go of inauthentic parts of your life.

Remember, it’s better to start this journey now than to wait until it’s too late. True confidence comes from within, from honouring who you really are.

Take the warning seriously: you were born to be authentic, not to wear masks. The journey is challenging but ultimately liberating.
